How the Travel Adapter Calculator Works

The calculator reads the standard plug type(s) used in your home country and compares them against your destination country's standard plug type(s). Where there's an overlap, your existing plug already fits the socket and no international plug adapter is needed. Where there's no overlap, it names the destination's plug type directly, so you know exactly which travel adapter to buy instead of a vague "check before you go." Types of Travel Adapters

Both of the two common adapter styles only change the pin arrangement — neither one converts voltage.

Single-Type Plug Adapters

When a Country Uses Multiple Plug Types

Quite a few countries list two standard plug types rather than one, usually because an older standard is still wired into some buildings alongside a newer one. Grounded vs Ungrounded Adapters

Grounded (Earthed) Travel Adapters

If your device has a 3-pin grounded plug, use an adapter that preserves the earth connection rather than a basic 2-pin pass-through — some cheap adapters quietly drop the ground pin, which matters for higher-power appliances.

Ungrounded (Two-Pin) Adapters

Do I need a different adapter for every country I visit?

What does it mean if a country uses more than one plug type?

Some countries standardized on one type but still have older sockets or hotel wiring using another, so both remain listed as in use.
